Daytona 2005

Daytona 2005
Chris Stanley, Ron S. and I were the riders on this trip. Chris and I departed Georgetown in a thick fog at 6:30 a.m. that turned into rain by the time we got into Elgin ( less than an hour) , riding in the rain is not a big deal if its not raining really, really hard , which it wasn’t – Yet ! We met Ron over on the West side of Houston , the rain gear that he had on looked like it had been abandoned by a homeless person that traded it in for a garbage bag. We headed out as three and slipped out of Texas just as the rain turned heavy, really heavy! It felt like Déjà vu from my 2002 Daytona trip and I was a little fidgety to say the least. We rode tank after tank in a miserable, 2 inch an hour 40 degree rain, soaked to the balls by lunch time. We made a stop somewhere in LA. For gas and they had a dryer at the truckstop so we got a fresh (Dry) start again. Within Twenty minutes we were soaked again , riding in a hard ass, wind driven rain. Chris and I have ridden together enough to know that we weren’t staying where we were , we only had five days and we were riding, Ron seemed to have other ideas , he seemed like he got crabbier every gas stop and wasn’t into it. We soldiered on and rolled into Gulfport Miss. Around 8:00 p.m. we got a room , got dry, got food, got beer and got Happy ( short lived though!) the next morning it was Sunny and looking good , we got riding , no problems ,we sailed across the rest of Miss. And Alabama and into Florida, we made it past Mile Marker 5 ( Where I was rear ended by a truck on the way to Daytona in 2002) it was a relief to me , the rest of that day was relaxed for me . We got into Daytona after dark and got our room and then headed out to see what was what. Ron stayed back, he was tired, so Chris and I went and rode Main St. and hung out downtown for a while before going back to the Hotel. The next day it poured, we rode to Denny’s for breakfast and then went back to the hotel parked the bikes and took a cab to Main St. We bought the usual shirts and pins and then started drinking , a lot of Budweiser and then the Jaegermeister shots started. Chris and I were OK but apparently Ron wasn’t. When we got to Froggys Saloon we all split up, Chris was looking for a bag of shirts he had lost and Ron was doing something so I went into Froggys , about 30 minutes later the three of us got back together in front of the bar and apparently Ron had a “ Situation” in the bar and we needed to leave :quickly, so we did. About an hour later, at Denny’s (yes ,again) Ron decided that he wanted to fight so we let him sit by himself , then with a homeless mental patient , at this point it was hard to tell who was who ! Finally back at the hotel it was clear that this trip as Three was a mistake. The ride home was quiet and uncomfortable ( thank god we weren’t in a car!) when we stopped in LA on the overnight on the way home there was friction that was getting worse . On the last day we dropped Ron off in Houston and rode home, I got to Hare (The Bar) before dark and saw Lynda before going home. Five days 2,800 Miles ,one person too many ! The moral of this story is : The road is a tough place to find out that you don’t want to be in someones company, The smaller the group the better , and know your riding buddies !
