South Padre Island 2002

South Padre Island Bikefest Oct 2002
Chris Bennett, Jay Baer and I were the riders on this trip. This was the first trip that Chris and I went on together, this was the first and LAST trip with Jay! When we were in Austin (At I-35 & 183) I asked them what their tolerance to rain was I.E. do we put on rain gear after the first drop or wait for an ark floating storm, I’m not real quick on the raingear , but by the time you’re drenched it’s a little late ! Anyway neither Chris, nor jay even owned raingear, this told its own story! We never hit any rain on the trip! Chris was riding his Yamaha, it was a 1600 cc cruiser, nice bike and Jay had a Gold Wing. Chris and I were compatible as far as riding and no matter what we did Jay wasn’t happy: Too fast, too slow, too hot, too cold …….South Padre is a nice ride from Central Texas , just about 400 miles , not too long , not too short. We took about 8 hours getting there, stopped for a lengthy lunch and a lot of gas stops (It seemed like a lot!) When we got there and got registered I could tell Jay was having Harley envy and the devil in me came out and stayed out. I needled him all weekend, the more I messed with him, the more he insisted that his bike (a Honda) was superior and real men rode Gold Wings. The second day we rode in an escorted ride into Mexico , about 5,000 bikes participated , it was pretty cool, we rode across the border and all parked in this square in Matamoris and then shopped and drank beer before returning across the border a few hours later. The only thing about the bikes in Mexico that bothered me was the Mexican women had no shame about climbing on peoples bikes for pictures being taken by their friends, without so much as asking, other than that it was all pretty tame. After getting back to the Island we rode around and then went to dinner and rode around more ( the islands pretty small , so we saw it all--- About 10 times !) There were a lot of nice bikes at this one , I saw the largest gathering of Springers I’ve ever seen , I’d say 100 – 125 in one group ! ,pretty neat. The following Morning we headed home, which was one day earlier than planned since the weather forecast for the following day was pretty dismal. Our ride home was sunny and hot, the people that came home the following day rode in a windy, fifty degree rain! We rode home at a better pace than we went down at. We made it home in about 6.5 hours , the highlight of the return trip was in Lockhart, when at a gas station a guy came up on a horse and asked Jay to watch it, we got a great picture of Jay as the stable boy! Other than that it was an uneventful, but very nice ride.
